[personal profile] runpunkrun is having a fantastically interesting conversation about terminology in fandom by age demographic.

It struck a chord with me because I keep seeing this term headcanon and two people have used it in comments to fic I posted at AO3. I find it curious because in both cases, for me, the scenarios are not head canon. They are AU's taking a left at canon. Headcanon to me (that turned into fanon after awhile, I think) is Buffy always smelling like vanilla. It's true in my head and always shall be so! Fic is so often AU which is just an alternative to the canon. Using the word canon suggests a concrete idea of what something is or should be. And AU's are explorations from a point in canon. Naming something a head canon then, for me, suggests a personal understanding of events that will not change from how I perform the intersection between the source and fandom. Like how no matter what I write about Buffy, she always smells like vanilla (even when it's mixed in with the scent of dirt or blood).

My favorite headcanon is actually a post-series canon. One Thousand Kisses Deep was a fic that I wrote about the end of the slayers and that, to me, is how the series ends. It's obviously an AU from Chosen, but if I had my way that is a narrative end that makes sense.

This vid hit me in all the good feels. So much joy and total adoration. It reminds me of how much I loved fandom and how much I miss being part of it. Gwyn has a very deft hand with pacing and cuts, and the vid features so many awesome fandoms. I smiled throughout.

Happy Friday, fandom!

seraphcelene: (bitches be crazy)
Oh, fandom, thou art crazy and getting crazier ...

Now, I'm going to need all ya'll to calm the fuck down, and as my co-worker likes to say, take several seats.

This is not the first time in recent months where I have read an article like this one. Canon and Fanon have been separate things just bydefinition. The soaring popularity of fannishness and the rise in social media have reduced the distance between fan and creator and the result seems to be this weird assumption and insistence by fans that the content they consume be shaped to fit what they want. In other words, they feel entitled to fan service. As a writer, I object. The content that I create, as much as I hope it will appeal to others is not written *for* others. It's what *I* want to write, largely for me. Sometimes I loose track of that, but as I have been recently reminded, it's important to remember.

Now, as a fan, I also object because giving me everything I want isn't probably what I need. My feelings may get hurt and I may be unhappy, but if what happens makes sense then I am onboard.

I have some serious thoughts about the crappy ending of TWD's last episode, but those are going to have to wait because I'm on my way out the door. The following is completely unrelated. Just a bit of general fandom cheer because it's awesome.

Enjoy!

Okay, so I've kinda been away doing school and work and wedding coordinating. I understand that the world doesn't stand still while I'm busy with other stuff, but still ...

You guys, so, what's a prompt table and how do I use it?

Plus, I'm going to need a beta soon. Any volunteers?

*facepalm*

I have just realized that the trend of smooshing together celebrity couple names was totally swiped from fandom! OMG! Why didn't anyone tell me? I thought it was stupid, I still think it's stupid, but it makes sense now! Long before there was Bennifer or Brangelina and WAY before TomKat, there was Spuffy!

And that leads me to a question. Are all the BtVs couple titles linked to Spike? I admit I'm having trouble remembering others that just don't sound totally ridiculous.

I got Spawn, Spillow, Spander, Spangel. But do we call Buffy and Angel - Bangel? Is there a Biley or Ruffy? How about Billow or Wuffy? Baith or is it Fuffy? I am confused!

I am woefully uninformed!!!!

Who did this first? Who actually thought it would be cute to mesh peoples names?! And why isn't Spuffy, Bike? That would have been SO much more fun. You could tell all of your non-fandom friends that you ship Bike and they would be even MORE confused then they already are because what the hell is a Spuffy anyway?!

Yes, I am knackered and obviously I don't need any more coffee.

[livejournal.com profile] annakovsky, [livejournal.com profile] swmbo, [livejournal.com profile] moireach, [livejournal.com profile] bear: These gals amuse me to no end! Apparently [livejournal.com profile] annakovsky won the morning AND she's reading slush. Dude, I remember those days and the ecstasy of mockery it induced.

Now, I need quality HP recs. Since [livejournal.com profile] moireach introduced me to Silvia Kundera's Sixteen in Bulgaria I have been pining. PINING!! And the rabidity of the HP fandome scares me to the point that I dare not go out in search of fic on my own. I don't want to lose any body parts. So, rec me silly!!! But let's make it good people! I mean REALLY good. I don't want things in which Ginny Weasly is dating Tonks and calling her Nymph unless it's like AMAZING! You see where I'm going with this?
seraphcelene: (Asshats by seraC)
Fandom is, unfortunately, full of Asshats! Just when I think that I might spread my wings a bit and move into other fannish mediums, I am reminded of other people's rude stupidity. Finding entire pages of Waking Moments hotlinked to other sites as part of their galleries is part of the reason why I closed that site. Spreading Stain is small and I'm not pimping it because I don't need that sort of attention. It's annoying and just gives me a headache.

As much as I would LOVE to try my hand at making vids, I just refuse to deal with the whole clip theft issue. So, if I do ever finish the two Roswell vids on my harddrive, there they shall remain. Along with the Buffy vids and the Farscape vids that have never seen the light of day. Nope. Staying put. Maybe I'll start giving away the ideas for those much more talented and much more willing to put up a fight. Right now I am not that girl.

... only it wasn't. Not completely. My thunder was totally stolen.

So it seems that once again fandom is full of wank and kerfluffles. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water someone says something, it's taken out of context and much too seriously, and then next thing you know things are really out of control. BBF has been experiencing the same technical difficulties.

Oh, fandom, how I love you. BTW -- House was way good tonight. I missed most of SVU but caught the payoff at the end.

In other, less controversial news, I had a birthday. It officially ended fifteen minutes ago. I am 28. Bless me father for I am getting old. And in my dotage, as in my youth, there are many things that I just can't be bothered with. Figuring out fandom is one of them.

Still! Many thank you's to [livejournal.com profile] thawrecka and [livejournal.com profile] dafnap for the birthday wishes. It's nice to be remembered since mostly I am not. I might flush this journal because, really, what's the point. I am not the seemingly hated [livejournal.com profile] jennyo and I am not all inflammatory like dearest [livejournal.com profile] annakovsky. I am not hunted like the now absent maayan, nor am I much loved like our dear [livejournal.com profile] shrift. Not that I mind. At least not this year. I've gotten over LJ and seem to have found quite a few things to do offline. Besides, I've got time. My domain doesn't come up for renewal until April. I'll make a choice then. I'm totally into this year, so I'm not bothered with the necessity for making a choice.

In the meantime, this SoCal girl has better things to do with her time. There's this huge, annual football game that I have to prepare for. And when I say prepare, I mean, PREPARE! Those little smokies don't just hop themselves onto the toothpicks. Someone has to actually *put* them there. I also have to pick up an Eagles jersey because no one should doubt my love for my boys. And even though T.O. is uncertain and Chad Lewis is no longer in, I believe that we still have a fighting chance.

[livejournal.com profile] dafnap, I hope your week improves. There are no real words, but you're in my thoughts. I know it doesn't really help, but, well, there it is. I am thinking of you. [livejournal.com profile] moonwhip, feel better. [livejournal.com profile] moireach, have you been writing?!?!?!? I know you're busy, but I need fic. I'm at loose ends this weekend and I don't want to spend ALL my free time at the gym.

Speaking of which. I lost four pounds this week. On purpose. How's that for tenacity?

Fic archive is now up. House of Leaves has the fic through To the Waters and the Wild. I still have to archive Eternal Return and A Wave of Moonlight Gloss. It's rather odd that I've got the site together just in time to annouce my retirement from writing. But hey. You can read it all there.

ETA: Random and curious tidbit. The working title for When In Dreams I See Her was Lobster Pots: a dream or madness.

So here goes:

Closed Waking Moments. Feel free to swing by and pay your respects. It's was fun but I just don't seem to have the time to dedicate to it. End of an era. Sad, really.

Updated Excess, Folly and Delight with fic. Pretty much just what's been recced here. I've also changed the layout and have a slew of back fic to take a look at. So there may be another update coming soon.

I'm working on a new layout and update for the hub (Essential-Imperfect), but that may take a moment longer as I have to code the blogger page that falls into the iframe.

Also working on two new sites. One will be a Meredith Gentry appreciation site. Very small, nothing in particular. Just because I can and because I want to. The other will be a place to house my fic and art. The collective will become exactly that. It will contain links to the other sites and update notices. Livejournal will be for blogging, etc. If Pretty, Pretty hasn't been shut down by geocities, yet, that will also be closing.
