Fic Rec: Witness Me by brophigenia. (Raven Cycle AU - Kavinksky/Lynch)

Why: Because this fic is everything! All the ugly, fucked up potential that is Joseph Kavinsky and Ronan Lynch. It extends the darkness that Stiefvater delved into in Dream Thieves and dirties it up even more. This fic GOES THERE and leaves brusies behind. Kavinsky isn’t just a bad guy and brophigenia teases out the complexities of the character and his relationship with Ronan with a subtly that almost belies the brutality of the fic.

R Rating - exactly as explicit as you think it is.

Summary: “I’m not anybody’s fucking bitch, he snarled back, and got to his feet before Kavinsky got any more ideas.

Yeah, Kavinsky snorted, looking him up and down, bruised and battered and obviously hard in his jeans, you sure about that, sweetheart?”

I am enjoying THE HELLS out of Yueltide! I've only gotten through the E's but here's what I love the best so far. Although, there are a lot of other good things and honorable mentions, like The Sleepy Hollow fic, for example. Right now, though, The Brothers Bloom one is cream of the crop ...

Fair Play | Belle | Dido Lindsay, Elizabeth Murray | Aunt Mary had given the new little girl one of Elizabeth's gowns. She looked very well in it.

Eldest | Sleeping Beauty (1959) | Maleficent, Flora, Fauna, Merryweather | Once upon a time, there were thirteen fairy sisters. Now there are only twelve.

had to leave myself behind | The Breakfast Club (1985) | John Bender/Brian Johnson | Three days before John Bender's 18th birthday, he disappears from Shermer, almost as if he'd never been there. Brian wasn't ready for him to go. Brian's never ready to let him go.

the best damn card trick in the world | The Brothers Bloom (2008) | Bloom, Stephen Bloom | With Stephen gone, it's left to you to tell your own stories.

So, tis the season for gift giving and fic giving and thons and yuletide's. The No Shame Holiday Fanfiction whosits, is amazebells with the prompts! Go look, go see, go pick something shiny to write, so I can love all over it.

No Shame! Holiday Wish Fulfillment Ficathon

And if you don't know what to do, here are the prompts that I think really need to be in the world, like now. Or at least very soon!

If that wasn't clear ... Go forth and write! Please.

- Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, Amelie, so choose your silver heart again - for [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 - Someone totes needs to write this one, because, dude! It's Amelie and if you're clever enough to pull that off, you are totally teh beeus kneesus.

- Up/Calvin & Hobbes Crossover, Russell and Calvin are roommates their freshman year in college - also for [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 who apparently knows how to prompt a prompt because I totally think that my head just exploded from the awesome!

- tim burton's alice in wonderland, alice/the mad hatter, i'm afraid you are--entirely bonkers. but i'll tell you a secret: all the best people are - for [livejournal.com profile] portions_forfox

- The Big Bang Theory/Sherlock/House - Absolutely anything that features Sheldon, House and Sherlock (or any combination) interacting - for [livejournal.com profile] xx_pinkstar and it is SUCH a delicious prompt that it should be illegal. It might be impossible.

- Push, Nick/Cassie, normalacy. (Basically, I want something dealing with what happens when Division is taken down - what do they do next?) - for [livejournal.com profile] redbrunja

- Push (movie) -- Kira. Anything exploring her POV, because the movie sure didn't. Blandness is a survival mechanism to stay unnoticed, while she urges grown men to jump off rooftops - for [livejournal.com profile] rosaxx50

- sleeping beauty, maleficent/king phillip, here is the repeated image of the lover destroyed - for [livejournal.com profile] jada_jasmine

- rpf. marilyn monroe/montgomery clift. he's the only person I know who is in even worse shape than I am - for [livejournal.com profile] margottenbaum

--------------------------------------------

And you have to go and read this which is one of the first written because it is awesome. I don't watch Teen Wolf, and know nothing about this outside of the movies; this fic is awesome.

Secondary one-off characters are difficult to get right. They are such easy fodder for Mary Sue-ing. No such concern with [personal profile] lithiumdoll's The Fire Handler. It's gritty and desperate, with hope and madness tangled and barely balanced on a knife's edge.

"So Francis, he gets his cloak and he puts it on the water. Gets his staff, ties it to the cloak ... and he sails anyway. He doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing, but he sails anyway."

I love how the Joker is a haunted man -- haunted by Harvey Dent (and a little by Rachel Dawes), by his own madness and, perhaps most importantly, haunted by the Batman. The atmosphere of chaos and shadows ride the knife's edge of perceptions so beautifully. There is this disconnect that both is and isn't. The Joker is both aware and not aware of the way that he is fractured. He acknowledges that he is a broken thing very clinically, but not as if it makes a difference or changes the way that things are. He's just insane and that's a double edged sword because its both true and not.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] fated_addiction
Fandom: Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles
Rating: R

I love the weaving of past, present, future that was and maybe wasn't. Such a gorgeous layering of elements, acknowledging the trippy aspect of fucking around with time travel that the show has just barely scratched the surface of.

This is so harshly nuanced and the connections between John and Cameron and Alison and Cameron (again) are awesome! I also love the martyr imagery. John trapped by his destiny so completely that he's even trapped by the people he's supposed to be saving; trapped by the knowledge of past and present and that in the end he can't really save anyone because *this*, the end of the world, always happens. It never not happens.

Problem is that until last week I didn't have a set method for keeping track of the fic that I want to add to the long list of Year's Best. There's a bunch of folders where I save links from when I updated Excess, Folly and Delight that I still use, but its full of old stuff and things need to be recced and purged. Goal for 2009: Clean out old links. I started and found this which was *supposed* to go on the short list. Stupid thing is that I made the point of saving the link that last week of December because I knew that I wanted to include it and that I didn't have the url. I then proceeded to forget to add it. It was buried in the miscellaneous fic folder.

Anyway ...

It's very odd to find myself falling half in love with a fandom whose source material I loathe. Because doubt it not, I think the books are royal crap. It's everything else around the edges that seems to be calling me. Things that are drawing the gold out of the dross.

Title : The Still Hour
Author : [livejournal.com profile] ophelietta
Characters/Pairings : Jacob, Bella, brief mentions of E/B.
Summary : Their love is so dystopian.

Rec: A gorgeous, gorgeous, poetic, broken and sad vision of the future. [livejournal.com profile] ophelietta fleshes out Meyer's caricatures lovingly and precisely, and writes an end to the world that's worthy of the "idea" of the characters as Meyer never managed to realize them. Exploring ideas of survival, humanity and memory, The Still Hour is beautifully and most gorgeously painted in shades of shadow and ash, giving us a peek at who Bella could become.

The Lady is mercilessly beautiful. Her skin is bone white and her hair is mahogany, not the grey of ashes and dust and sand that coats everyone else. She moves in perfect silence. If you have the good luck to see her, then it is already too late.

Sunday after I posted my lynnevitational fic I went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Mostly because I was so anxious about the fic that I needed something to distract me and going to the movies ensured that I wouldn't be clicking the refresh button every five minutes to check for comments.

All in all, I'm glad that I went. I wasn't planning to go, not really. My experience with the HP movies has been less than stellar, but this one ... this one I was surprised to discover I totally adored.

In other news, the [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitaional has been a resounding success, I think. I've gotten to read through some of what's been posted, although not all because there are quite a few WIP's. Anyway, I am in love with:

Birds in Cages (Spike, R) by [livejournal.com profile] cadhla
Poggra-mengri (Giles/Jenny, PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] stakebait
Chthonic (Fred/Faith, G) by [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
The Drizzle and the Sunshine (Gunn/Buffy, Wesley/Gunn, NC-17)by [livejournal.com profile] viciouswishes

Outside of the ficathon, I've also just read a fabulous Addams Family/Angel cross-over. Totally had me laughing and those voices are beautifully spot on. A great, great read.

The first step went moderately well. Just so you know, I wouldn't trust me with a happily ever after, fluffy bunnies, or cute puppy dogs with those big, shiny, you-know-I-am-very-cute eyes. Nope. I wouldn't. Someone would die or be eaten or end up otherwise tragical.

However, I did manage not to kill anyone off, no one drowed in angsty tragedy and I did NOT fall dead on my desk. Unfortunately, I just don't think I've got the heart for happy. It doesn't sit well and I think that [livejournal.com profile] glossing was on the right track. So, I'm embracing the dark side of the Force.

"Luke, I am your father."

Sorry. Wrong dark side.

Now, today I plan to be all productive, unlike yesterday, and get loads and loads of work done, unlike yesterday. I've even postponed coffee for this goal. POSTPONED coffee. I just may fall out of my chair and die right now. But, I've set myself a goal. A shiny goal.

For the rest of you: Enjoying your day and trolling for recs, or not! I give you one of the bestest fics EVER! [livejournal.com profile] annakovsky wrote [livejournal.com profile] swmbo a valentine and it is mighty sublime. Grey's Anatomy, Bailey/George perfection. She's nailed the characters, the voices, the interactions. It's sweet, soft, sad and I am totally in love with this fic. So go on and read. Send the author mucho feedback!!

The Golden Lotus

“Bao bao huai jung shuay,” Xue sang and ignored the red-eyed shadow creeping along the wall. She curled around Li Mei, breathed in her softness and the scent of opium.

It was not a good day for foot binding; Li Mei had screamed herself hoarse. Xue held her hand and ignored the pop and crack of her own feet struggling against the bindings and the silk of her slippers.

“Biao,” a voice whispered from the dark.

“Yao mo,” Xue shivered against the kiss of silver at her throat. “Do not kill the child.”

“I come for you, Slayer. Only you.”

If your're one of the sad and lonely few who don't own Sims2 (unlike me and [livejournal.com profile] trajictale) or if you're just sick of the LJ and the boob tube, I offer you more fic recs. The first set are still The Best Fic of 2004.

The following will probably be culled and included in next year's list. These are all the results of the very awesome 2004 Yultide Challenge.

Multi-fandom recs AHOY! )

ALSO!!!!

My car hasn't floated away yet but that really isn't saying much. In the meantime, someone please send a life raft. If the rain ever ends, I still need to get to the market for toilet paper. Thank you in advance.

Just had my heart handed to me. Beautiful, sad, bittersweet fic. But good. Like early morning light coming through the blinds on a Sunday morning, good.

Logan/Rogue
X-Men Movie-verse
The Magic of Belief

This is amazing. I've been tentative about getting behind Logan and Rogue because I'm all about Rogue and Gambit. But stuff like this makes me believe. It's beautiful prose, some really stunning turns of phrase. It's sexy and it's soft.

GO READ! And send the author feedback.
