If your're one of the sad and lonely few who don't own Sims2 (unlike me and
trajictale) or if you're just sick of the LJ and the boob tube, I offer you more fic recs. The first set are still The Best Fic of 2004.
The following will probably be culled and included in next year's list. These are all the results of the very awesome 2004 Yultide Challenge.
Growing up (Chronicles of Narnia)
I've only read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and this makes me want to read the rest of the Narnia stories. It's a beautiful exposition on growing up and resisting change but how it happens anyway, whether we want it to or not and how do we cope. It's also about sisters, about how we love them and how difficult it is, when faced with them, to say exactly what we mean. Growing Up is an exceptional story! I quite loved the melancholy mood. I really enjoyed the language and the slightly desperate, mildly insane Susan (standing with her hair billowing in the breeze and her hands in her pockets).
Wanted: One Hero, At Any Cost (Spider Man movieverse)
Harry has money and power and prestige -- he can buy anything. He can have homes in Gstaad and Monaco. He can date the most beautiful women in the world -- he can get a prize-winning scientist to meet a lowly college student, but he can't get Peter Parker to return his calls. And Harry would bet his inheritance that Peter never fobs Spider-Man off with some lame excuse about delivering pizzas on time.
And there's the whole, entire point in a nutshell. Wanted:One Hero, At Any Cost is on the long side, some of the same ground is re-hashed using different words, but the sum total is an excellent look at Harry Osborn and his obsession with Spider Man. This fic taps into all the sub-text and applies all of Harry's passion and focuses it into awesome threesome: Harry, Peter and Spider Man. As a bestfriend once threatened by an addition to The Crazy Jamaican's life, I can sympathize. It's no fun thinking that the one you love is being stolen away. The painful part of this story is, that in a way, it's all true. Spider Man stole Peter away and Harry is all alone. And then he goes insane.
Ravens and Writing Desks (Alice in Wonderland)
Okay. With the creepy. Morbid and creepy and hair on your arm raising. In a good way.
Hook or Me (Peter Pan)
There is nothing quite like Peter Pan written well. Hook or Me is in the vein of We Outgrow Love, Like Other Things and A Hundred Years ago. It is a beautifully written meditation on things real and dream and how the two crossover and become confused. I love the imagined beginnings of Mr. Darling and how it turns out that he is also Capt. Hook. It's all so yummy and marvelous that I don't quite have the words. Just go read it and enjoy it. This is an amazing fic. The only downside is the formatting. With big chunks of text to read through it can get a little wearing on the eyes.
Artificial Devotion (Galaxy Quest)
This is totally silly and completely awesome!!!
This is About Lilly (Veronica Mars)
I especially loved the last two sections of this. This is About Lilly is indeed Veronica Mars from beginning to end. Bright, sunny, dreamy and dangerous in a dark and secretive sort of way. And if that doesn't make sense than you haven't been paying attention. This fic, like the show, has layers.
ALSO!!!!
My car hasn't floated away yet but that really isn't saying much. In the meantime, someone please send a life raft. If the rain ever ends, I still need to get to the market for toilet paper. Thank you in advance.
