A big PlayStation3 landmark is expected in February 2005, when more details on Sony's top-secret Cell processor are due to be unveiled. The console itself is expected to have its first semi-public outing at the E3 trade show in May, but it'll probably be 2006 before you can stroll into Target and pick one off the shelves. Alas!
Rumors point to a major closed-door Xbox 2 conference at Microsoft's Seattle HQ in January. Whether details will leak out or not remains to be seen -- but it seems all but certain Microsoft will be ready to show off its next-generation console at E3 too. Microsoft will be looking to beat Sony onto the shelves, so perhaps this time next year you might be trying to squeeze an Xbox 2-shaped parcel under your tree.
Nintendo, not to be left out, is also planning an unveiling at E3. What it could be is anyone's guess. All the information we have is that the controller won't feature a D-pad or A and B buttons -- quite a break with tradition. May's going to be the biggest gaming news month there's been for years.
