So, project one is complete. I totally replaced the Evaporator Fan Motor in my fridge this morning armed with nothing more than my handy-dandy wrench and bit kit, and a YouTube video. There was only one hairy moment, but it is done and so far, so good.
In other news, for the first time in all of my 36 years (OMG! I can say that!), I am conflicted by Independence Day. It used to be all about parades and fireworks and sparklers in the front yard. Then it was about alcohol and fireworks and that extra day off in the work week. This year, it's like, huh... Back in 1776 I wouldn't have been included in that party. Maybe it was the Samuel Adams commercial that did it. The one with the black bartender talking about certain unalienable rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. There's something very disingenuous about the point of that commercial. I can't help but be reminded that my ancestors weren't even considered human in 1776.
I am, however, glad that we have an Independence Day, even if I wouldn't have been enjoying the celebration back in the day. I also have to wonder, why isn't Junteenth bigger than it is. Why isn't that federally recognized?
Either way, Happy Independence Day. Now, I'm going to go watch Will Smith blow up some aliens.

Date: 2013-07-05 01:36 pm (UTC)From:I'm basically the same age as you, I attended public schools in the supposedly liberal Montgomery County Maryland. And up until one of the speakers at my High School graduation, nobody had seen fit to mentioned that our county schools were segregated until 1963. Nobody bothered to point out the ramshackle buildings that used to be the 'negro only' schools. And again - my county is a fairly liberal one, and still nobody talked about it.
And the thing is, if any beer company was going to go there, Samuel Adams could have... if they'd mentioned Crispus Attucks, the Boston Massacre, and Samuel Adams' role in promoting both...
