I don't usually watch the Emmy's. Like the Miss America Pageant, I got over the whole hoopla surrounding most award shows a long time ago. The only real holdover is The Oscars and occasionally The Golden Globes. Generally, as a fan of genre TV, the Emmy's don't have much to offer me. Half of what is nominated I've never seen and the other half I've never heard of. This year, however, there was the shiny, sparkling allure of Mad Men. In the end, with sixteen nominations across a multitude of categories, they walked off with two golden statues. Mad Men was honored for writing and as Outstanding Drama show. Both awards are very, very well deserved. Of course I was disappointed that Jon Hamm didn't get Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but I also haven't seen any of the other nominated shows or performances so really had nothing to compare against. It could have been anyone. Bryan Cranston was one of my favorite things about Malcolm in the Middle so I'm thrilled that he won (even if I haven't seen Breaking Bad).

Over all the show was an odd one. The purpose of the host is to set the tone for the show, segue into and out of presenters and winners and, of course, to entertain. Having five very different hosts on top of all of the presenters just sort of muddled the whole thing to me. Howie Mandel was enthusiastic and not as interesting as I find him on Deal or No Deal. Everyone else was pretty superfluous and I completely missed the point of stripping Heidi Klum. I thought that she looked very debonair and very smart in her suit along with the guys and thought it was neat that she wasn't singled out because of her sex and dressed in a gown. So much for that. The gag kinda fell flat, although Jean Smart picked up the glove with her "I'm wearing a suit under this" comment during her acceptance speech. LOVED that.

My favorite bits of the night are probably the same as everyone else's because generally the scripted bits were lame and eye roll worthy. But there were a very few gems that stood out of what wasn't cut due to time issues:

-- Ricky Gervais was hilarious. That I won an Emmy, remember, and then the whole thing with Steve Carrell was awesome! I initially thought it was a one-sided joke by Gervais and that Steve was improvising beautifully. When Carell pulled out the Emmy I died with laughter. AWESOME!!

-- Don Rickles was awesome and I'm so glad they had enough respect not to try and play him off the stage. Although Kathy Griffiths is a total WTF. Rickles was hilarious and clearly didn't give two wicks about the teleprompter or whatever script that the show writers had cobbled together. For him to win, too, was just great.

-- I was excited to see Tina Fey walk off with so many wins, she's a funny and intelligent woman! The self-deprecating comments about her looks were a little less funny because she's an attractive woman. LOVED that Glenn Close won and loved what she said about "complicated, powerful, mature women are sexy in high entertainment and can carry a show". It's so true and FINALLY maybe someone will figure that out. Really intelligent TV seems to have migrated to cable.

-- Jimmy Kimmel's presentation of the award for Outstanding Reality TV Host, while long, had me laughing heartily. It was silly and gimmicky but that's the point because reality shows are all about the gimmick. Although I was rooting for Tom Bergeron, I totally respect that Jeff Probst won seeing as how he has been doing this the longest; it's sort of a nod to him, I think.

I can't end this post without a brief mention of the ladies and their beautiful gowns because I do love the pretty and shiny.

Christina Hendricks was GORGEOUS!! With the hair, the gown and that phenomenal cleavage. She looked grecian and earthy and just completely edible. Eva Longoria wore what is possibly my favorite gown of the night. I LOVED that jeweled bow. Unfortunately, cast mate Teri Hatcher only channeled Renee Zellwegger's gorgeous lemon yellow gown from 2001's Oscars without actually achieving the elegance. Kathy Griffith wore a curtain (only Scarlett O'Hara did that well) and Jennifer Love Hewitt was too thin. I miss the curvy, busty, beautiful body she had and almost didn't recognize her pointy little chin under all of that hair. How sad that after making that great statement about loving her body, she felt the need to carve off the womanly bits and turn into another Hollywood scarecrow, a pack led by the startlingly emaciated Holly Hunter.

Kyra Sedgwick was sweet and pretty in that little pink number and America Ferrera was to die for in all of that black ruching. I loved the movement of the gown. Vanessa Williams was GORGEOUS, but that's not difficult for her. Julia Louis Dryfuss's dress was amazing but she seemed very uncomfortable in it. Felicity Huffman is almost always on my list of best dressed because even though I don't watch the award shows, I do scroll through all the pics that get posted on the internet.

So, not the most exciting way to spend the night, but hey, the football games telecast this afternoon weren't all that interesting either. I check out on the Raiders/Bills match-up because I really wasn't expecting much. Unfortunately, I was wrong and should have watched it.

On an odd side note: I can't remember if they do this every year because I really DO NOT watch the Emmy's, but this wasn't a live telecast. The show actually filmed at 5 or so and there wasn't shows until 8. So if anything of serious interest DID happen, I'm sure they edited it out. Like the one guy's speech about the political idiots in office that was cut off in favor of a montage on the way to commercial.

Oh, and is it bad for me to laugh at how badly the Patriots got SPANKED by the Dolphins (of ALL Teams)?! That's not bad, right? I mean seriously? 38-13 guys? As much as I dislike the Patriots (have ALWAYS disliked the Patriots) that's a really poor showing. Granted their Messiah QB is out for the season (Phil Sims must be in anguish) but I would have thought they could keep it together a little better than that. I didn't see the game, it wasn't shown in my area, so I don't know what the issue was but this is definitely not your mama's Patriots. Not playing like that. Now, Matt Cassel is no Tom Brady, we know, and (offensively) he was up against a seasoned QB in Chad Pennington, but what gets me is the Patriots Defense not showing up for the game. They're usually much, much better than what that score would suggest. Of course, there's always a giant killer. We see games like this every season, where a do nothing team dashes the hopes of a more talented franchise. Coming off an undefeated regular season stretch it was an especially painful fall for the Patriots. That it was at the Patriot's home makes it ten times worse. Nobody likes to get spanked in their own house.

And yes ... I'm still laughing.

The thing that I really liked was seeing Miami essentially destroy the Patriots defense using the single wing. On six or so plays, they lined up with Ronnie Brown as QB, and those resulted in four touchdowns...

It came about because one of their offensive coaches was at Arkansas when they had Felix Jones, Darren McFadden, and Peyton Hillis in the backfield and a hot steaming pile of poo at QB. So they started using McFadden as a single-wing style QB about 20% of the time with astounding success - mainly because they had fantastic backs and McFadden was actually not a bad passer.

It wouldn't work as more than a gimmick in the pros, and you need two great running backs, but boy is that fun to watch.
