So … Drama.

I'm off-line for a couple of days and the Apocalypse looms. Nice going, LJ. I hope fandom isn't planning to make a run for all available exits because I like my little corner of LJ, despite the panic and "over reaction to a small but well publicized group's attempts to remove content they don't like" (thanks, D).

Now, I need to know … what's GeneralJournal and should I be getting one? How are we archiving our LJ's? Straight to your hard drive or is there someplace else in the ether? HOW do you archive your LJ?

Point me to answers, kids!

I should've emailed you with a HOLY SHIT! heads up.

GreatestJournal, as diachrony states. I got one, but as a precaution. I haven't been online much today so I don't know how most have reacted to LJ's response, but I had never planned to leave unless LJ didn't reply or I wasn't satisfied with their reply. I'm not at all satisfied about what LJ did, but their reply does make me want to give them another chance. However, if there is a mass exodus of fandom I am SO there. I'm tkp on GreatestJournal, and I'm keeping that account, just in case LJ ever pulls a stunt like this again. (Another thing: people were putting "lj_refugee" in their interests lists so they could use the interest lists to find people from on lj.

LJbook for backup, as kormantic linked. However, I used this LJ archive (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/), because LJbook uses PDF and I hate PDF. The archive deal was fairly easy to install and seems (so far!) *very* easy to use. I've been meaning to do this for a long while anyway; it's not a good idea to rely on anyone else to hold masses of your ideas and thoughts and creations and stories. LJ archive allows you to save your lj to your hard drive.

If you want more answers I've maybe got 'em!

Oh yes, and if you haven't, you can still go join [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts. I just think it would be awesome to have a comm that is *all* of fandom.

I've got a question ... does the archive you linked also save the stuff you've got in "memories"? I use the "memories" tool to keep track of all the cool stuff *other* people post that I don't want to forget.

Ah, I bet the answer is "no." But I gotta ask anyway.

no, only entries and comments.

I DIDN'T THINK OF THAT. Mostly I was worried about my own stuff because I use lj as a personal backup space for other stuff I do. Does ljbook save memories? I didn't even look at it 'cause of the PDF issues I have.

::sigh:: I don't know, but I bet it doesn't. I haven't tried any of these tools yet, but I really doubt any of them save "memories" ... which I use ALL THE TIME and fiercely don't want to lose.

It'd be easier (though time-consuming) to save the memoried stuff if it was just the main posts, but of course there are always goodies in the comments, and sometimes the comments are the reasons one's putting it in Memories in the first place.

Grrr Arrrgh. Nothing's ever perfect.

yeah, a lot of my memories are for comments as well. I was actually surprised to see that the archive tool does include every comment ever made to your journal--I didn't think it would. I haven't really looked at LJ Archive much yet, but I'll let you know if I find something about saving memories.
