Just when you think that it's safe to go back into the water, or, if you're me, just when you think that if you can hang on til January 1st all will be golden ...

wham!bam!crash!! Life slaps you in the face.

I truly, truly, honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry. Just know that I'll be very glad when this year is over.

Old Man Granddaddy died this morning.

Thank you. It's a little strange and a little surreal because he was on a ventilator and then they removed the tube and he wasn't. We got to all say good-bye which was very comforting, but as I drove away I was thinking that he's going to be dead in less than an hour. After everything with my mom, I couldn't watch them take him off the ventilator.

But, and I really hold on to this, Old Man Granddaddy (and that really is what I used to call him) was 84 years old. He lived a long life, had eight children and lived in three different states. He was mostly scandalous during his lifetime and smoked for most of that time.

He died from lung cancer. It's amazing to me that it took this long to develop. They only found it in the last week. It's ... odd. I'm still not sure how to feel abot it all.

But, tomorrow is another day and I'm clinging to the idea of next year. Next year. next year.
