“Our little group has always been
And always will until the end” - Nirvana

I think that this might have been the episode that I was waiting for. It’s all darkness, hope, love and wistfulness. They all look so young. Michael was devastating and the journey from where the boy that he was to the angry man, struggling to find meaning, that he becomes is the loneliest road ever. I don’t even think Max touches that one.

Knowing what we already know, this is the downward slope to disaster.

Isobel and Rosa? I had a feeling about that and there it is. The suggestion is that it’s something more than friendship, although that’s all that Rosa names it. However, Isobel’s body language, the way that she looks at Rosa, the entire conversation in the diner with its offer to run away, implies a deeper attachment. Fascination and obsession, among other things.

Isobel is … off … there is something that is NOT right about her. Theories: split personality or possession? Whatever it is, it’s creepy as fuck and Lily Cowles does a great job with the competing versions of Isobel.

Michael and Alex … How awesome are they?! Flirting, gentle, around the edges of each other and then they make that connection and it’s giddy newness. I really adore them! I love how wanna be punk rock Alex is. I love that he called Kyle out on his bullshit. I love that Michael stepped in, not just once but twice. The second time with devastating results. The two of them in the shed going from the highest of highs and then crashing to earth. Jesse Manes is a monster.

The thing about Michael and Alex is that they are wounded and they drift to each and are a kind of balm. They’re adrift until they find their way into each other’s orbit and it’s like on is the center for the other. It was a beautiful sharing of stories to watch Liz and Max and Alex and Michael find each other at the same time. To be having the same moments and experiences.

Max and Liz - SO DAMN HOPEFUL and YOUNG! Max wanting to change his plans for Liz. He’s so freaking in love with her that it almost hurts to look at. And Liz is so the girl with a dream. She wants out and she’s not going to let anything get in the way of that. I LOVED that about her.

“Heavy is the head that wears the crown.” - Shakespeare, Henry V. A hint of Roswell of olde. For a hot moment, when Max gives Liz that rose off his lapel I flashed back to Jason Behr. That move was something that *his* Max would totally have done while wishing Shiri Appleby’s Liz goodnight.

Again, they were all so young. On the cusp of adulthood and the future. The world opening up ahead of them only to skew left. There was still more mystery at the end of the episode. Although some questions were answered:

- What happened the night that Rosa died?
- What was really up between Rosa and Sheriff Valenti the Former?
- Who the mystery boy was who kissed Alex?
- What was up with Max and Liz?

There were still more questions in the end. The most important and pressing of which …

- What the fuck is up with Isobel?

The present day frame narrative was a little heavy handed and melodramatic, but that’s been Roswell, New Mexico thus far. My interest in the series was beginning to wane, but no lie, this ep reeled me right back in.

If for nothing else besides the line: “You would never survive a quinceanera. OH MY GOD!”

Luckily for me, though, there’s always Michael and Alex.

There are quite a few parallels between Michael/Alex and Max/Liz! Like both couples fell in love around the same time, one character from the ship left and then came back at the same time 10 years later (hell of a coincidence tbh). And of course there's the human/alien thing, and the keeping secrets thing.
