Unfortunately, Roswell, New Mexico is a bit of a dud thus far. Liz is beautiful and serviceable, and Max is broody and tall. Jeanine Mason cries really well and Nathan Dean Parsons is excellent at looking vaguely tortured.
It's not as action packed as the original and I find myself dozing off (nor hard since Tuesday night is Spin night) and getting distracted. I went and took a shower half-way through, came back, and didn't get the feeling that I had missed much. The alien plot is kind of standard issue at this point, complete with a conspiracy theory that functions to keep our One True Pair apart in the interim.
Between the two sets of unrequited lovers on the show and the alien arc, there is an immigrant in America storyline that doesn't gel with either of the two plot points. In fact, none of the plot points really tie into each other very well.
There is, however, one thing that is going to keep me coming back for a little while, at least ...
Michael and Alex!!! Now, that is the tormented, star-crossed love story that I am want to see.
“Every time you look at me, it’s like I’m seventeen again. It’s like the last ten years didn’t even happen. And then you look away and I remember everything.”
Alex is KILLING me!!
Vulnerable and needy and so, so sad. Alex and Michael together? There’s all the raw angst and heartache that I want out of this new iteration of Max and Liz, and that I’m not getting. In fact, Michael and Alex are the thing that’s keeping me coming back. I’m HERE for them!
Maria has a lot of potential, even if she has zero things to do right now. I like the actress, she could GO PLACES with his part. That’s a hard row to hoe because Majandra Delfino made that part her own! (Edited to add: Although I am straight delighted by the fact that Maris is being played by a gorgeous Afro-Latina actress. YASS!!)
Other than that. Roswell, New Mexico is flat, obvious, and full of clunky dialogue. Of course, tonight, we got the bonus surprise of seeing Max and Isabel making the beast with two backs on her kitchen counter (not, it’s suggested, for the first time). I was shocked and a little grossed out. The original series set them up as twin siblings. I think they’re supposed to be twins for fake, here. Somehow, especially considering the 9pm mainstream America time slot, I seriously doubt that there will be a shocking reveal later on that they really are siblings. This turn also leaves me wondering if Tess is going to be introduced or if Isabel and Tess are getting merged into a single character.
(Edited to clarify: It was JENNA and not Isabel. I totes did not register a second blonde on the show. I need to obvs go back and rewatch both the pilot and this episode cause dude, that was a crazy miss. They look similar, but they are clearly different peeps. My soul feels less squicked and more excited by the potential for ensuing drama. And Jenna COULD be Tess!! or Tess-ish?!) Anywhos!!! Onward!
