So here begins 2018 and my the launch of one of my goals which is to get back into posting. This is kind of a cheat. What's easier than recapping the previous year, eh?
1. What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?
This year was chock full of New Things! I turned 40 (for the first and last time ever)! Part of that new thing of being 40 was to celebrate my birthday every single month and to try and do new things. So, what did I do new this year? I went indoor skydiving, unlocked a castle, held a baby alligator, did a paint and sip class in which I painted a pretty beach sunset, attended a Fried Chicken Festival, managed not to spit on anything at a plantation in Louisiana, escaped from the po-po during a bank heist in an Escape Room (maybe I'm being a tad it dramatic there), made falafels from scratch, successfully dry brined a turkey, got a glitter tattoo and a flash tattoo (still not the real thing, I know), went to Lake Tahoe, drove down Christmas Tree Lane, sat in a steam room (LOVED IT), rode a gondola up a mountain, attended a Fried Chicken Festival, and destroyed the Death Star.
2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I set goals these days. The goals are subject to update and revision as the year progresses. The one thing that jumps out the most in my mind is that I lowered my BP by 10 points. I didn't initially put a number on how low I wanted to go, just that I wanted to get it down. So, at my last doctor's visit I had gone from 128/84 down to 117/80. I also committed to 12 books for the 2017 book challenge and I made it by the hair on my chinny chin chin.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
OMG! Babies … I am terrible at remembering who spawned, and as I get older there are fewer people in my friend group who do. However! Cindy Lou Kickass welcomed a gorgeous baby boy this year.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
People died this year. Lots of people, including a Santa representative and my old co-worker, but no one really close to me.
5. What countries did you visit?
England and Scotland.
6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
A better president. And world peace …
7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Probably the month of March cause I went to the UK for ten days with nothing but a carry on. w00t!
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I performed so awesomely at my job that I go a fat, unsolicited mid-year increase. The primary goal, I am sure, was to keep me from jumping ship. It was well earned and I appreciated the vote of confidence and the demonstration of appreciation.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I still don't have that tattoo I keep saying that I'm going to get, and I didn't finish my novel.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Wow. Plantar fasciatis continued to kick my butt a little. There was also a round with mid-thoracic back pain and the limited mobility of my ribcage on account of how tight my back muscles were from sitting at work for untold hours. I now work fewer hours, have a chair appropriate to my size, and a vari-desk at which I stand AT THE VERY LEAST Twice a day.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Hmmmm …. two things: The Chamber of Secrets for my nephew on the occasion of his 10th birthday and that random ticket to Atomic Blonde that I bought after waking from a nap in sweaty desperation during the height of stupid degree summer weather. The movie was surprisingly awesome.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My new supervisor, Jefesita who is made of awesome, kickass rainbows.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My old supervisor, El Jefe … and El Presidente Naranja and huge swathes of the general population. My bubble got burst real bad this year and that shaky faith in humanity was decimated.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Traveling … the UK, Lake Tahoe, Paso Robles, and New Orleans.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
All of the Black Panther trailers!
16. What song will always remind you of 2017?
Mi Gente and Havana, and Julia Michael's Issues.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? happier
ii. thinner or fatter? thinner
iii. richer or poorer? richer
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Aimless internet surfing and worrying.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Christmas was spent, as always, with family.
21. How will you be spending New Year's?
Ha! I went out for once (thanks, Bacardi!Clare!). Got to see a few celebs, do a little dancing and wear a sparkly dress. I probably won't feel like doing that again for another ten years.
22. Did you fall in love in 2017?
No.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favorite TV program(s)?
Stranger Things!
25. What was the best book you read?
Joe Hill's The Fireman.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Javier Navarette
28. What did you want and get?
The Illustrated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! Thanks, Donna!!
29. What did you want and not get?
A new full sized laptop. A Forward Triple Helix which my ears, as it turns out, are too small for.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Shape of Water
31. What did you do on your birthday?
I had breakfast at Ihop and got a massage.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Finishing Ye Olde Novel. Maybe getting that tattoo ….
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
I finally identified my style icons!! I'm about 65% Mimi G and 35% Lisa Bonet. We shall call it Urban Bohemian.
34. What kept you sane?
Spotify and random podcasts on iTunes. I'm looking at you Stuff You Missed in History Class.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I didn't even go see Justice League, but I crushed HARD on Jason Momoa.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The whole shebang. But mostly the current political administration in power and absolutely everything that they represent.
37. Who did you miss?
Cindy Lou Kickass! Amber.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I don't really like to meet new people, but my Armenian Daughter is pretty fun.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017:
You really don't know anything.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
“I got issues, you got 'em too.”
Oh, and 2018 is looking pretty good cause I have a first already. Sunny Moraine asked to read my fic "kiss me and you will see how important I am" for Keep Singing: a Bethyl Walking Dead podcast and I consented. She has a beautiful voice and is a wonderful narrator. She reads two other chapters from other fic. My piece starts at 1:16:30. I am tickled by the honor.
