A drop-dead gorgeous heroine, sex, fairies, a hunky honey to do all that sex with, and an awesome Goth-girl sidekick. What more could a new SyFy show possibly need? Much more than that weaksauce description my indicate, actually. I've been watching the Canadian show, Lost Girl, that premiered on SyFy back in January. The premise is interesting, even if some of the individual elements are rather over used. Although I am thrilled with some of the dynamics of the show, there's still work to be done.

Lost Girl centers around Bo (Anna Silk), a bombshell of a succubus who, prior to the beginning of the series, was completely unaware that she was a succubus. She's introduced in the series premiere (It's a Fae, Fae, Fae, Fae World) killing a guy who slips a roofie to a girl in a bar with a kiss. Bo is gorgeous and bodilylicious. Played a little saucy, she could do with a tad more angst than is currently on offer. Apparently, regularly waking up next to dead lovers isn't as alarming to Bo, as it might be to everyone else. Considering her past and, what one would assume leads to, her inability to develop intimate relationships, Bo should come across as a lot more damaged and guarded than she appears. Right now, she's just a bad ass who doesn't like to be told what to do. She's also consumed with finding out about her parents and why she was abandoned to the human world with no clue of her identity.

Characters:

Kenzie (Ksenia Solo) is the girl that Bo saves. She is also the best thing about the series so far. Ksenia Solo imbues the show with loads of quirky charm, some of which masks a less than ideal past. She's got the nuance that I'm missing in Bo. Without Kenzie (or maybe I should says Solo's rendition of Kenzie), Lost Girl would be dead boring. Kenzie gets all the best lines, the best wardrobe, and she's got chemistry with everything that walks on set. Although Silk's Bo has a lot of sexual chemistry, Solo's Kenzie has that ability to just connect regardless of the type of relationship.

There's also two potential love interests in this tale. Bo hits the sheets with Dyson (tall, blonde, scruffy, Chris Martin-esque world of yummy Kristen Holden-Reid), a were-wolf, by the end of the second episode (Where There's A Will). Dyson is a detective with the local police force, and along with his Siren partner, Hale, covers up fae involvement in the human world. Unfortunately, Dyson's also a bit bland. I don't know if that's supposed to be a hallmark of his character or if Kris Holden-Reid is just that bad of an actor. The other love interest is Lauren (Zoie Palmer), a human doctor in service to the Light side. She hasn't been on-screen all that much thus far, so I've zilch to say in regards to the character besides I hope that she's as hot as but more interesting than Dyson

What you need to know is that there are Fae everywhere, of all kinds. I like that the universe incorporates worldwide mythologies. So far we've been introduced to fae from English, Irish, Greco-Roman, Japanese, and Chinese mythologies. There are also two camps, Light and Dark (of course). The two sides have been at war for centuries and all fae have to choose which side they will serve. The premiere introduces us to the idea that Bo's lack of allegiance is problematic. She's even forced into a battle to prove her worthiness as a fae, and to earn her right to choose a side. Oddly enough, Bo wins the challenge, of course, but she doesn't choose a side and NOTHING happens. It's that lack of consequence and the disconnected Monster-of-the-Week villain that makes Lost Girl less than intriguing. Granted, we're early in the season and even Buffy was pretty episodic in the beginning. I can only hope that this show starts to draw together the threads it's littering through the episodes. I also hope that the writing gets a little tighter, and the plotting is a little less uneven. Falling back on the detective agency idea (that everyone seems to buy because I guess it's that easy to open and run a detective agency), episode two of the series, Where There's A Will, was a bit of a farce. What I really do like is that Bo's sexual appetite is just that, a biological imperative. There's no moralizing, girl's got to eat. I also like that Bo is bi-sexual, again without the moralizing. It just is what it is.

So, let's keep our fingers crossed. Let's hope that Bo still sizzles, Dyson stays hot, and Kenzie continues to be the Kenziest Kenzie ever. Let's also hope that the show is on an upward trend.

I've only seen bits and pieces but I find the sidekick WAY hotter than the lead. Which is unfortunate if you're supposed to be a succubus.
