Just saw the character headshots for The Last Airbender. I had already decided not to see the movie when I heard about the casting, seeing the actors "in character" has only added insult to injury. What they've done to Kitara and Sokka pretty much breaks the heart.

The guy on the top right. Is not "white" he is Maori. Or I at least think this is the right guy. If that is Cliff Curtis then yeah he is considered "non-white".
I'm not into this fandom so I don't know anything.

It's the famous Earthsea Fail all over again. Have they learned NOTHING?!

It's so stupid and full of Great White Fail I just have to laugh (and cry at the same time). Ignoring this movie. Ignoring it hard.

Although, I'm mildly happy that Dev Patel was cast as Jesse McCartney's replacement. The last minute addition of an ethnic (Indian) actor to a white washed cast doesn't go very far. It's a half assed conciliatory gesture that allows the studio to point and say, look, there is an ethnic actor in the cast. Problem is that the entire cast really should have been Asian. But, okay, I understand the politics of Hollywood as well as anyone else. As much as it galls me, I could get around Aang being cast the way that he is: White Hero saving the world from the bad (and in this case, dark) evil Fire Nation. What kills me is Kitara and Sokka. The two on the bottom half of the picture are from an Inuit based tribe and their characters are dark skinned. Making Zuko, the bad guy dark, but casting all of the "heroes" as white is extremely problematic. It's an understatement to say that the characters borrowed heavily from Asian cultures. I just don't see how they can justify the casting choices.

I look at those pictures and I'm so disgusted and disappointed and, well, darned mad!!

The original show is made of AWESOME!! I would definitely recommend it.

I LOVED that! Cracked my shit right up!! And at the time I totally needed the laugh. It kills me that mainstream always has to equal "white" and that this myth is perpetually insisted upon that white people can only watch white people. I went to a performing arts high school on the drama track and the reason that I decided that I didn't want to be an actor was hugely influenced by the Hollywood color barrier. I didn't want to fight the fight only to get crumbs.

Argh!!!!

I am so not even interested in seeing this movie anymore. My joy was killed dead!
