Oh, fandom! Why always with the Wank?

I have no words because ... well, right now, I am slowly but surely disengaging. I might become re-interested in the future, who knows, but right now? Right now, Agatha is dead (I accidentally killed her while committing Twilight fic) and fandom gives me a whopping big headache.

What's happening, anyway?

Wank about how academia and academics is evil too fandom and ruins everything and how high school English is responsible for adults NOT reading for pleasure. It's silly and stupid. There's almost two camps, from what I can tell, however. Those who think that academia is okay except that there are those academics who inisist that there way is the only way and if you can't wrap your brain around the nuances of their thesis than you are STOOPID. Which okay, those people are rabid and exist in fandom a-plenty as non-academics. Then there's the ones who think that meta and think-y thoughts and anything that is NOT squee is of the devil.

I'm baffled because fun, for me, is made of squee and meta. I love them both and with rare exceptions I don't do one without the other. It's like my default. It's just one more stupid bit of wank making the rounds.

Oh, ok. I've just seen lots of my flist reference it and say it was stupid. Which is evidence of a good flist, I guess--no actual wank, just wank meta ;o) Which I squee over. I really haven't even sniffed wank in ages!

You're right. There are plenty of people who think their way is The One Way, and their Ways are varied and many. They *are* lame, but they're not just academics, or Spuffy shippers, or slashers, or feminists, or what have you. LAME, L.

There's a new girl at work (girl! Really, she's only like 14; we have a youths program) whose face really reminds me of yours and it makes me miss you. More. <3

I'm writing a novel. It's only around . . . oh, 15,000 words right now, but it just might work.

Totally Lame!!

I am totally happy that I have the face of fourteen year old because it means that I am aging well (even though I know that is not what you mean). ;o)

I am TOTALLY impressed by the word count. That is made of total win and YAY!! I can't wait to read it when it's all shiny and published. Kate, my first beta ever, was just signed to a book deal. I am so excited!

To clarify, I squee over my flist and meta, not actual wank. Though I confess to finding it guiltily entertaining when I am far enough from it.

You are totally made of awesome AND smart, enjoying the wank from afar. I made the mistake of reading a snippet of the anti-academic thing, attempting to get an understanding on the why of it, and was totally offended. Got my little panties in a twist. I stopped reading and let it go. Except that I'm finding less and less fandom related stuff occuring in my LJ and on my flist and that's making me sad. And very disconnected.
