Sarah on a mountain. Left behind with Cameron, the women who are already warriors. The boys are going out into the woods to bond, to run with wolves and become men. John needs to become a soldier. It's going to happen sooner or later. Watching Sarah negotiate the necessities of the timeline against her son's childhood is proving fascinating. Last season it was all about John holding on to his childhood, demanding, in the way of all children, that his mother put him first. In John's case, he wants to come first before the human race, to be protected against the vagaries of the life that he is dreaming.

I'm STILL thrown by Jonathan Jackson as Kyle Reese. He's still too baby faced. I can't shake Micheal Biehn. Beihn looked more like Derek Reese does now, weathered and care worn. In a way, however, it suits. John Connor is not only Sarah Connor's son, he is also part Kyle Reese and we're reminded of that. Kyle is where John gets his naviete, hope for the future. Jonathan Jackson and the actor who played Bledell are just SO Damn Young. Derek g-damn REESE. Will I EVER get accustomed to Brian Austin Green being so damn hot? Reese as the PTS soldier. I LOVE those snapshots of Reese and we haven't seen that this season, that intersection between now and later; Reese in the present versus Reese in the future.

This episode was also about lost chances, lost dreams, futures that will never be. Cadet Bledell who wants to be a runner, but who will be a soldier. John who wants to be anyone but John Connor. Little Marty Bledell who is just a kid and hopefully won't be cannon fodder, collateral damage in a war that he has no idea about. Even Sarah, performing parenthood for us who haven't seen her do so. Further attempts to soften the character, feminize her, to what purpose I'm still not sure. Although, in a way, it's a deeply tragic commentary on the relationship between John and Sarah. The strain of their relationship, Sarah never getting to be a "mom". Always a drill sargent, a protector. "Are you a mom? You kinda suck at it." Sarah's never had to enact motherhood. It isn't a thought at the forefront of her mind except as a protector. Mothers protect their young and that is what Sarah has given John. Watching her soften, it's a curious sort of redemption (for lack of a better word). An unnecessary one, I think, at least so far. Sometimes, I still pine for Linda Hamilton's tough, fractured Sarah. But then we get Headey on the cell barking at Reese about the dire repercussions of Bledell dying.

I wonder if this episode does anything to enlighten John on the enormous amount of sacrifice exerted to keep him alive. "He died for you. We all die for you." Truer words and I wonder how John will embrace the burden of those words in coming episodes. You can't hear that and not be changed.

In other news, I have completely given up on Heroes. I'm lost. I don't get the retcon. I don't WANT to get the retcon.

In additional news, I love how the guys jump into each others arms after a touchdown. I mean, full on, Hooray jumps and they expect the other guy to catch them. And they always do. Teams! I love you, man!
