Last night I watched Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.
Here's the question that made me furious last night and is continuing to drive me UP the wall.
How many states border the Pacific Ocean?
5: Oregon, Washington, California, Alaska, and Hawaii
WTF?!?!?!?
Hawaii is IN the Pacific. I do not understand how an ISLAND. A land mass SURROUNDED by a body of water can BORDER the water that surrounds it!! And we're not talking like Catalina Island or something RIGHT off the coast. We're talking about an island that sits nearly halfway across the Pacific Ocean. It's almost in the g-damn middle. Now if they had asked "What states have borders ON the Pacific Ocean?" that would have been a different kind of question entirely.
And the thing is that all the little fifth grade kids got it right and 5 was announced as the correct answer and I don't understand!
Please help me to understand!!
I spork you question. I spork you right in the middle of your misleading eyeball.

Date: 2007-03-02 07:00 pm (UTC)From:but no really, that's a hateful question. Also smelly. However, if you're talking political borders, Hawaii is considered a border of the US. I think?
However, the question was not worded to refer to *USA'S* borders, and actually what it *is* asking makes no logical sense.

Date: 2007-03-02 07:32 pm (UTC)From:See. You See my point. If the question was How Many States Have Borders on the Pacific Ocean then I could understand the answer being five. But considering the question that was asked I don't understand how the answer is five.
I really, really do not like that question.

an outer part or edge
Dictionary.com:
the part or edge of a surface or area that forms its outer boundary.
I went to look because I thought maybe the primary definition is a geo-political one. Encarta and the Cambridge dictionary use the geo-political defintion first, so I guess it depends on the source and although I understand how the question in the right context could be worded correctly, I still don't like the way that it is written and I still think it's misleading. And not only because I got the answer wrong (the theory my baby brother supports).
But thanks for checking this out for me! I'm getting over it. Gonna let it go. See me letting it go ....
