Summary:
River laughed and said, “Mei shen me, I'll never leave you” to the tears in Simon's eyes.
Mal cursed beneath his breath, sorrier than he could say, she knew, but a vengeful fury had risen into his heart at the sight of Zoe dead in a pool of blood at River's feet. When he murdered her, he slit her throat from ear to ear.
The shell of her fell without regret and River walked out into Serenity.
River was home and she walked the stars without a suit and, when she was of a mind, stared at the sun for all the long day. But she began to miss them, the crew, and eating and walking. She missed dancing and the scents Inara wore in her hair. She missed the engine grease beneath Kaylee's nails, and Simon.
Then, River was angry and because they are the same, Serenity was angry, and she growled and shook as if to break apart. No more sweet girl for Kaylee, no more easy, eager girl for Wash. Mal shouted, stared out into the black and River knew that he was looking for her, cursing her and she laughed so that everyone could hear it. The Shepard crossed himself and Jayne uneasily recited the half-forgotten prayers his mother taught him all those years ago.
It was cold and the food turned bad too quickly, the fuel burned low long before it should have and Serenity was no longer Mal's. She belonged to River, restless and angry.
end.
Translation:
Mei shen me – never mind; it’s nothing; it doesn’t matter
