Authors Auction Rights to Name Characters.

That's the gist of it anyway. Apparently it's all Neil Gaiman's idea to raise money for a First Amendment Organization. Everyone from Stephen King to Nora Roberts are taking part and authors are auctioning off various things to be named: characters to zombies to businesses. The author of the Lemony Snickett books is giving his highest bidder the chance to create an utterance for Sunny Baudelaire (did I spell that right?).

I'm curious to see what the fans manage to come up with and how much they're willing to pay to get it. Considering the investment (re: overinvestment) of fans the world over, a considerable chunk of change should be raised. The resulting crop of characters and locales will, hopefully, be interesting. I wonder how many people will stick their own names in the pot as a character in a Stephen King zombie book, especially considering that you may be the first townsperson to be turned into one of the living dead.

The authors, ever wary of fanfiction and copyright laws (I am sure) are retaining the right to use the provided names as they see fit.

So, good luck to all of you bidders out there. Have fun.
