That's it exactly, I think. Angel's 'experience', if we want to call it that, balancing Spike's gun-ho enthusiasm. The middle would be the perfect place for the two of them, but they're so caught up in this game of one-up that getting there has turned into this whole 'thing' into which even the rest of W&H (read AI) has fallen. Someone mentioned that, in terms of W&H, it's a case of not being able to see the forest for the trees. I think that's true for Spike, as well. The end of Damage was great for seeing them begin to move beyond the petty back and forth and into something that will make for really interesting drama, truly deep consideration and negotiation of their past, future and current predicament (not only as vampires with souls but also as "Champions" working for/with W&H.
