I get that Matthew Bourne is supposed to be contemporary and avant garde. I can see the merit in the type of performance art that he produces, but I can't say that I love it. Or even like it all that much.

Ovation TV is hosting a Battle of The Nutcrackers. A "Grudge Match" competition running for its second year and pitting versions of The Nutcracker against each other. One version is shown per night from Sunday through Friday. Beginning Friday or Saturday viewers get to vote on their favorite Nutcracker. Last year Mark Morris' Hard Nut won. Hard Nut is a very enjoyable version of The Nucracker, but I'm looking forward to Friday's airing of the Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker:The Motion Picture. It's my very favorite Nutcracker EVER! It easily supplanted my adoration for the spare ABT production featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland. Although, I still have a lot of affection for that version.

Between now and Friday I've still got to get through the very traditional Bolshoi Nutcracker which I haven't seen in its entirety andd Bejart's Nutcracker that I haven't even heard of. I am sure that I will prefer them both to Bourne's very non-dancy Nutcracker. In my defense, its not that I don't love contemporary dance. I am completely enthralled by Brazil's Groupo Corpo, for example.

I still haven't seem all of Bourne's Swan Lake, so maybe I'll dig that better. But his Nutcracker, as cheeky and colorful as it seems, leaves me cold.
