How do you say thank you?

Personally, I always feel the need to explain. Explain what? I hardly know. But, there it is, this driving need to say: oh, thank you. my eyes are not this color, they're contacts. or glad you like the story, i was really hoping to convey buffy's deep and abiding hatred of pound puppies.
What is that all about?

1) downplay it by exaggerating and making a joke
Friend: You look cute in that shirt.
Me: I know! It's damn hard to be this cute all the time, but someone has to.
2) blushing - compliments are the only thing that can make me blush
LJ Person: I love your writing.
Me: Blushes and stutters until I can think of a nice way to say thank you without coming off like a complete dork.
It's so strange, because I know very few women who take compliments simply, and I don't know many men who think a compliment is a big deal.

Heh. I'm of the "belittle the aspect being complimented" type. "You have a beautiful voice." "Oh boy, I haven't sung regularly in years." etc. Tends to stop the compliments ...
Dude, no wonder I'm in therapy. :-/

Exactly! Why *is* that? Women need to relax. Take a chill pill, dude. Something!

If you can respond to praise without reverting to dorkdom, I am in awe!!!! I always squirm and beam at the world and then fall into complete psuedo-academic nerd mode. Argh!

Now, are you a combination of talent and discipline or just have THE bestest voice ever, and when do I get to hear it?!

Hey, maybe we can get Tallian to put out a CD or something. Oh, you know what's weird? I have all these singer friends, and I'm deaf! No kidding, my best friend is a professional singer/songwriter (or she was, before she sorta bowed out to be a stay-at-home mom.)

And Buffy doesn't hate pound puppies! WTF? Shame on you. Explain yourself!
Hee, just kidding. ;-)

(Anonymous) 2005-08-07 04:07 am (UTC)(link)Hm. Pound puppy brown, you know?
I can't see worth spit so I wear glasses or contacts. My most recent contact perscription was the same for both eyes, which almost NEVER happens, so I got the chance to buy a box of clear and a box of gray. Since I wear the clear more often I ran out of those before I ran out of the gray. So, I've just popped in my last pair of gray contacts. I'm actually excited to buy clear again. Gray is fun, but I miss me brown eyes.
It's actually a strange phenomena. I dyed my hair a reddish brown once and after a month or so, I was really ready to dye it back to black. I totally missed it. Lesson learned from the experience? I am a streaks kinda girl and not the all over type.
Now, what I'd like to know is how does dio respond to compliments?

I guess it depends on my mood how I respond to compliments. And on who's offering them.
Gee, it must've been awhile since this came up, because I can't think of a specific example ...
If it's a stranger or acquaintance or casual friend, I probably just say "Thank you" or some variation. I don't think I brush it off, but I might minimize it by saying "oh, only a little bit" or "I try" or something like that. Not always -- I usually just thank them.
Closer friends, I probably make some goofy remark that makes them laugh. Although, if I'm in a down mood, I'll say how horrible and disgusting I really am and unworthy of their regard, and they'll tell me my brain is broken and they love me anyway. Erm ... you know. It all depends.

It's genetic. My mom has a beautiful singing voice, but never got much training. She keeps it to singing in the church choir. I've been in school choirs since I about the age of six, and left the last one at about 25 or so. I went to college for theatre, and it would have been musical theatre if I could dance. ;P
I'm thinking about joining a little community choir this fall. And the fall theatre season is calling me, too.
