The Aha Moment!

I keep waiting for it but it just doesn't seem to wanna happen.

As purportedly beautiful, saucy and clever as she is, I do not get Keira Knightly. She is thin and decidedly unsexy. I also think she rather looks like a rat.

With that in mind, among other things like PLOT and ACCURACY, I will not be going to see King Arthur. It's rather odd because this type of movie usually tickles my fancy and I don't usually mind a creative effort at dusting off the classic and mythical. This time I seem to be taking offense. 'Guinevere', in her trousers and blue paint, with her bow and tight, glistening abs, is annoying me to no end.

Not that I'm not willing to be shown the light about our dear Miss Knightly. Kate Beckinsale was a huge 'Huh?' for a long time. Then I saw Laurel Canyon. Finally, I get it.

Actually, I've been hearing quite a lot on my friendslist lately about how the movie really isn't too inaccurate regarding the Sarmatians, Picts, even specific Roman characters; they just aren't using the Malory legend we all know and love. Don't know enough about it to judge, myself.

The script is kind of crappy in places and Keira gets some of the worst lines. But! It does have some VERY gay knights, and that made me happy. (Gayest Lancelot ever, which is saying a lot...)

Unfortunately, warrior girl she is not

It's not the historical aspects that I mind. From what I can tell (and what I've vaguely heard) it's mostly fine for a 5th c. period piece. It's the characters that get me. If it were just another knight/hack 'em slash 'em I don't think it would be a 'deal'. BUT. Guinevere (being female and all) would not be a warrior by any stretch of the imagination and none of the material that I have read suggests otherwise. Lancelot was a late addition from, I do believe, Welsh sources. And there are so many versions of the tales from such a variety of sources from the English (Malory) to the French (Chretien de Troye) to German that the rest of the legend is rather hodge podge. Arthurian research, at least for the real-time historical aspects, is rather dodgy. So Bruckheimer pumping the movie as the truth behind the myth is sketchy at best. It really is weird because I really don't tend to mind artistic license. But for some reason . . .

Ah well.

As for Keira?!? Okay. That first set of shots are *really* hot. Very non-rodent although still a tad skinner than I like. But still, tres sexy. I can see that part. Now I need the acting part to rise to the surface. I saw Love Actually, Bend it like Beckham and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Is there anything really stellar that you can rec? I saw Laurel Canyon because of Christian Bale and Frances McDormand and was very pleasantly surprised. So, I'm not counting Keira out.

Oh, I hear you on the distortion of character. I still haven't been to see Troy for that very reason. It's just that I'm ignorant enough about Arthurian scholarship that I can go "ooh, pretty" and not be bothered. :)

The movies you list are pretty much the movies she's been in, so far. She just filmed The Jacket (http://imdb.com/title/tt0366627/) with Adrien Brody, in which I believe she plays a young American drug addict. No clue how good it will be, but that's probably the one to watch for a demonstration of acting chops (if she does indeed have them). And in the meantime, there are always pretty pictures at keira_daily...
