Meme: 2007 Year End Fic Round-up
WHAT I WROTE THIS YEAR:
Three Ways to Burn a Hole in the Carpet (BtVS, Spike/Jesse, NC-17) 1/5/07
Five Ways to Kiss the One You Love: A Valentine (BtVS/Angel, Buffy/Angel, G) 2/13/07
What Not to Wear (Angel, Cordelia, Gen, drabble) 3/22/07
The Presence of Departed Acts (Angel, Angel, PG-13) 7/15/07
The Habit of Transferred Affections (The End of the Affair, PG) 7/25/07
Out to the Black (Firefly, Simon, River, G, drabble) 7/26/07
no part of the dream (Mad Men, Adam, G, drabble) 8/20/07
Thine is, Life is (BtVS, Buffy/Dawn, NC-17) 9/1/07
Lemondrops (Mad Men, Adam, PG-13 for themes) 10/18/07
Snow, Blood and Loss: Commentary on Ever After: Five Fairy Tale Endings (BtVS/Angel, meta) 10/20/07
The Light Before We Land (BtVS/Angel, Buffy/Angel, PG) 11/30/07
Gathered in the Gales (BtVS, Faith/Riley, PG-13) 12/21/07
My favorite story this year (my own): The Habit of Transferred Affections
My best story this year: The Presence of Departed Acts
My favorite line of this year: This is a hard one because I tend to write in collections of images. But, if I had to pick just one itty, bitty, single, solitary line -- it would be ... "Dawn is the part they raped out of her, tinkered with and replaced."
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: The Habit of Transferred Affections
Most fun story: Five Ways to Kiss the One You Love
Sexiest story: as squicky as the pairing is - Thine is, Life is
Hardest story to write: The Light Before We Land
Most unintentionally telling story: Lemondrops
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007: The End of the Affair, Mad Men, Faith/Riley, Buffy/Dawn. Yeah, I might be on the naughty list for the rest of my life for that last one.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?: I think that I wrote my most complex fics ever, theme wise. The Presence of Departed Acts and The Light Before We Land were both thematically dense pieces. That density worked well for The Presence of Departed Acts; the tone and language translated well to the kind of story that I was trying to tell. The Light Before We Land never worked itself out well enough to have the same kind of elegance and punch as Departed Acts. What I learned is that time is all you need. Well, not all, but it helps if you have plenty of it. The Light Before We Land had a gestation of about a month. I wrote it in under two weeks, although I was going through some pretty strenous mental gymnastics for a month leading up to writing, trying to make it work out. Departed Acts was written in a span of a few months. Walking away from it and coming back gave me the opportunity to really learn to understand what I wanted from the fic and how I wanted to go about achieving it.
