on "book club" scams targeting authors and f*cked incentives

Genre Grapevine: Book Club Scams Are a Warning of Emerging AI Super-Scams [Jason Sanford - nota bene, I've been the target of such scams but have not fact-checked Sanford's specific details]

I'm sad that people are stuck in positions so desperate that they fall for this. I hope people get warned about this. I've gotten a couple of these and gotten asked about one that involved a scammer that cited that I was working with them (I was not, lol).

That said, I'm almost positive I've seen accounts of similarly structured scams from a time before modern mass telecommunications, when now you can fake up a bunch of "people" to convince greedy/hopeful/desperate marks that they've stumbled on some Good Thing and the marks can't (easily) verify those "people." You can do this in print with ~testimonials, but not at scale and not in realtime in this manner.

I'm not saying AI isn't a problem; I'm saying that if people weren't forced to desperation (or straight-up greedy), the incentive structure that enables the AI deployment to be profitable (so to speak) with this target ~audience would not be as successful. Which is perhaps splitting hairs and is the point at which I expect to be flamed off my own DW.

Very simplified but: Anytime you create an incentive A, you create a secondary incentive A' for bad actors to exploit the system to access A.

Hilarious terribad example of this: I was contacted for a blurb/etc for what sounded like an extremely unoriginal sexploitation "trans woman" sci-fi book (you know, sexbot cyberpunk sleazy noir but with a trans angle). That's not all that surprising and it's theoretically possible the book exists and was written by some human, or it exists but was written by some LLM, whatever. That's not the incentive. (For that matter, I'm not in a position to criticize a sci-fi book artistically on sleaziness grounds, please! I have published books full of genocide, rape, incest and other objectionable material. I'm a trash panda aesthetically.)

No: what was interesting from a scammer vs. mark arms race evolution perspective was that this author claimed to be (approximately, I'm writing this from memory) a trans woman in ~South Asia who was inspired by having done ~sex work. This is a clever way to appeal both to "woke" crowds and A Certain Sleazy Crowd! For ~privacy/safety reasons she could not accept interview/live call requests. This was accompanied by a SUPER fake-looking (likely AI-generated or badly Photoshopped, take your pick) Hot Asian Chick headshot.

So yes, absolutely as a trans person I know that safety/privacy are hideously important. But once incentive A exists, someone has incentive A' to piggyback on A, which is what looked like was happening here. I just blocked the email address and moved on. At this point, I've set up my email to auto-delete any email that mentions "Goodreads" or "Amazon", unless they're on a SMALL whitelist, among other countermeasures. Life is too short and I have ramie to spin!

I said cynically to [personal profile] telophase that I suspected that the "actual" "author" was some middle-aged white dude scammer sitting in North Dakota or, more tragically and pessimistically, some human trafficking scam farm outside the US.

I assume this is also where the fake-looking-ness is partly to screen out people who are moderately suspicious/vigilant/smart enough to avoid weird, scammy emails and/or ask around for more information, and to screen for people who are sufficiently desperate, greedy, or naive (cf. shitty obvious "tells" in phishing scams). But I'm out of field so I could be wrong.

Regardless: it's not that legislative or technological protections aren't important or necessary or desirable, it's that the underlying human problem of the incentives vs. secondary incentives is inherently intractable. :(

The Day in Spikedluv (Thursday, Oct 2)

We had another visit from the coyotes this morning; this time around 4am. Thankfully they weren’t as close to the house (aka, as loud) and they moved through quickly. (I also think I heard them yesterday morning at some point, but Pip says he didn’t hear them, so I’m not sure whether I dreamt it.) They haven’t been around all summer, so I guess it’s our turn to host them. o_O

This was another no-shopping day, but I got in a walk around the park even though it was Very Cold. Pip called me just before I left downtown because he was in a “pickle”. I groaned, because his pickles become my pickles. There was a snafu and I needed to run to the tractor supply store to pick up some parts. It was still so cold at that time (about 8:30am) and I’d just been out in it for a walk, that I was thinking I would be too cold to get my usual ‘reward’ smoothie. However, between the sun and the heater, I had gone from cold to toasty by the time I got there, so I did get my reward smoothie after all! *g*

I visited my aunt, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a couple of walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. We had grilled hamburgers and potato salad for supper. (The potato salad was so good, if I do say so myself!)

I read a bit more in Winging It and watched some HGTV programs.

Temps started out at 35.2(F) and reached 65.5. The temp must’ve been lower in the morning because there was frost on the old t-shirts (lol) Pip used to cover the mums when I left the house this morning.

Sunflower Auction: Art by Kingstoken

I won the bid for [personal profile] kingstoken at [personal profile] sunflower_auction!! Their offer was to create a cover or moodboard. I asked for a cover for either of my Jessica Fletcher, Agent of SHIELD stories, or for the series as a whole.

The Day in Spikedluv (Wednesday, Oct 1)

How is it October already?!!

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. Today was a no-shopping day, but I got in a walk around the park while I was downtown. I stopped at Stewart’s on the way home and returned a book to the library on my way to mom’s.

I did a load of laundry (washed, dried AND folded) , hand-washed dishes, did a load in the dishwasher, boiled potatoes and stirred together potato salad after they’d cooled in the fridge, formed burgers for tomorrow’s supper (to have with the potato salad), went on several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter.

I started a new book (Winging It with You) and wrote ~1,000 on a new fic! (If you’re thinking it’s a Hudson & Rex ‘fix-it’, you’d be correct. *g*) I also watched some HGTV and Hallmark.

Temps started out at 39.4(F) and reached 66.6. It was cold this morning. A taste of winter that I do not appreciate.

Anime watching roundup

The seasons of both The Summer Hikaru Died and Kaiju no 8 both ended on the weekend, and while the former was more satisfying than the latter, I had a pretty good time with both.

The cliffhanger Kaiju no 8 ended on feels less satisfying than last season's - feel less like an actual cliffhanger and more like just stopping the story in the middle of a fight - but I'm looking forward to season 3 if/when that arrives. The beginning of the season had a bit of a lull with the bunch of new characters I had yet to care about, but ever since Kafka fighting Isao it's been great, building and building emotionally. I wouldn't say I'm in the fandom, which seems to be composed mostly of teenagers super hot for Hoshino and his bowl cut writing copious amounts of readerfic, but I am writing fic of one kind and considering fic of another, and contemplating buying merch when I get to Tokyo.

The Summer Hikaru Died's season ender had a great emotional moment, and I'm excited that it's been renewed for another season (whenever that will arrive! I'm willing to wait). A lot of people who've read the manga seem to like the anime adaptation more, so I'm not sure whether to read the manga or just wait for the next season... The theme song is also stuck in my head, so there's that.

With regard to Bleach I finished the old anime series, sped my way through the anime movies, and have now got on to the Thousand Year Blood War anime. So I can slow down now, LOL. I actually think the Fullbring arc might be better in the anime. The animation towards the end of the old anime is kind of stiff (a lot of nothing moving but people's hair), but the pacing of the emotional backstory for the Fullbringers spread through the arc is better, and I like how it captures that slow quiet heavyness of Ichigo without his powers, that feeling like he's underwater and just pretending everything's fine. I also like how small and petty everyone in X-Cution ends up feeling; that honestly makes me have more sympathy for the characters than less. It's an arc that's really grown on me! I'm still disappointed it didn't make more use of Chad, but it's a great arc if you're emotionally invested in Ichigo & Ishida's friendship, as I am.

I do feel a little disappointed the old anime didn't have more Hueco Mundo filler, though. I think that would have been a great way to get deeper into the arrancar leftover after Aizen, who are relevant in the last arc after all...

My verdict on the movies: Eh, they're okay. They're basically filler arcs but shorter. I think the first two are the best, and the last one is the messiest with the highest highs and lowest lows. The third film feels like an interesting idea rendered in the least interesting way possible (I also feel like it's catering to the Ichigo/Rukia shippers, whereas the fourth has fanservice for Ichigo/Orihime shippers instead). The idea that without memories of Rukia Renji would forget he has bankai is interesting! So is the idea that Byakuya would believe Ichigo about a Rukia he doesn't remember because Ichigo mentions Hisana! But the execution is, eh, whatever.

Anyway, I'm not far into the TYBW anime yet but it's so much prettier than the old anime and I'm really vibing it. The last arc of Bleach is all over the place but there are parts I really enjoy that I'm excited to get to. It does still have some of that hair blowing in the wind so you won't realise it's otherwise a still image stuff 🤣 and way more of the hollows politely waiting to fight while someone monologues than I'd like, but still! I'm not far in but I'm excited and having fun! I can't wait to see Ishida suffer 🩵🩵🩵

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: Children of the Storm (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) by Elizabeth Peters, A Death in Door County (A Monster Hunter Mystery) by Annelise Ryan, and A Bitter Feast (A Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James Mystery) by Deborah Crombie.


What I am Currently Reading: I just finished the Duncan Kincaid book yesterday, so I haven’t started anything yet, but I have picked a book off my shelf to read: Winging It with You by Chip Pons.


What I Plan to Read Next: I currently have zero unread books out from the library (how did that happen?!!), but I expect some in soon, so probably one of those.



Book 102 of 2025: Children of the Storm (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) (Elizabeth Peters)

This book was really good, but it was the last few lines that made me chuckle and have to go back to re-read them several times. ( spoilers )

I really enjoyed this book and am giving it five hearts.

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, Sept 30)

We were very rudely woken up twelve minutes before the alarm went off by the very loud yipping of a coyote that sounded Too Danged Close to the house.

I hit the Pharmacy while I was downtown (and picked up some things at Price Chopper while I was there), and got in a walk around the park. I stopped at the bank on the way home to pay the LLC’s school taxes.

I did a load of laundry (washed, dried AND folded), hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I also hard-boiled some eggs and diced up some veggies for a potato salad.

I finished Duncan Kincaid and watched some HGTV programs.

Temps started out at 48.2(F) and reached 77.4. Morning lows are going to be in the 30s for the next three days, which I am not looking forward to. The next two day highs will be in the low 60s, but then we’ll be up to 80 again at the weekend. What a wild ride.


My dad passed away 12-years ago this past April. He would’ve been 82-years old today. Happy birthday, dad!

Summary: Jiang Cheng is an oreo cornetto who had his flavor core melted by the Flavor-Melting Cornetto, Wen Zhuliu. To save his brother, Wei Wuxian gave his flavor core to Jiang Cheng. Somewhere out there in a Chinese convenience store cooler is an oreo-topped cornetto with chocolate flavor inside, an example of false advertising.

After being thrown off by the second-rate kornetto, Wen Chao, in a place where other cornetto fears to be dumped in - the public park trash can- Wei Wuxian learns a forbidden cultivation, the power to recycle discarded and melted cornettos.

With an army of broken wafer cones, torn cornetto wrappers and puddles of melted ice cream, Wei Wuxian makes a name for himself as the Founder of Recycled Cornettos.

Watch him as he calls on all the discarded cornettos to exact revenge on the Wens.

Reccer's Notes: The atrocities of the Sunshot Campaign…if everyone were sapient Cornettos. (Presumably inspired by the donghua’s jarring and anachronistic injections of Product Placement into the narrative, which became a running gag among the fandom.)

i don't usually go for crack fic, but there's something really beautiful about fic that takes a cracky premise and plays it utterly straight, to the point of genuine human pathos that's only enhanced by the sheer ridiculousness of what's actually happening
